Dear Abby Archive

I read the following Dear Abby years ago.  It made such an impression on me that I felt the need to search for it on the internet.  Read on:

DEAR ABBY: I am a 36-year-old college dropout whose lifelong ambition was to be a physician. I have a very good job selling pharmaceutical supplies, but my heart is still in the practice of medicine. I do volunteer work at the local hospital on my time off, and people tell me I would have made a wonderful doctor.

If I go back to college and get my degree, then go to medical school, do my internship and finally get into the actual practice of medicine, it will take me seven years! But, Abby, in seven years I will be 43 years old. What do you think? — UNFULFILLED IN PHILLY

DEAR UNFULFILLED: And how old will you be in seven years if you don’t go to medical school?

Bird Flu Fear And Other Government Induced Hysterics

News headlines today announced that President Bush is preparing for an all out Bird Flu epidemic.  This includes enough vaccine to immunize the whole nation and setting up quarantine boundaries enforced by the military if necessary.   Alexander Hamilton must be rolling over in his grave.

The Modus Operandi of the US government is to allow catastrophes to happen and then show us how much they care by throwing billions of dollars in aid at the problem.  Take 9/11 for instance.  Years later, have all of the “watch-list guests” from the Middle East been deported?  Of course not!  This would be a legal, preventative measure, making another terrorist attack in this country unlikely.

Are there still people flying in and out of the so-called high risk nations with bird flu?  Yep, everyday.  Do illegal aliens, specifically ones of Arab descent, still move freely across our southern border?  Absolutely.  Is it any wonder that conspiracy theories gain momentum during these types of crises?

One would have to conclude that our government is the most inept governing body in the industrialized world or that it benefits somehow when disasters occur.  The mishandling of the New Orleans disaster seemed more like a training exercise to study the logistics of transferring citizens in a mandatory fashion, and to examine the reaction caused by disarming law abiding citizens who were protecting their own homes!

Our forefathers understood the need to protect the citizens from a government which left unchecked, would run amuck.  The media does little to question the constitutionality of all these new policies to keep us “safe”.  A passive population laps up the idea of giving up freedom for artificial safety.

George Washington said, “Government is not reason, it is not eloquence, it is force; like fire, a troublesome servant and a fearful master. Never for a moment should it be left to irresponsible action.   Amen.
